-는 편이다
-neun pyeonida
tend to, rather, fairly
Intermediate · Saying what you think and feel
-는 편이다 (-neun pyeonida) means "tend to" or "be on the ... side." It describes a habit or quality in a softened way, like "I tend to sleep early" or "it's fairly quiet."
How to form it
| When | Add | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb stem (present habit) | + 는 편이다 | 자다 → 자는 편이에요 |
| Adjective stem ending in a vowel | + ㄴ 편이다 | 크다 → 큰 편이에요 |
| Adjective stem ending in a consonant | + 은 편이다 | 많다 → 많은 편이에요 |
| ㅂ-irregular adjective | ㅂ becomes 우 + ㄴ 편이다 | 춥다 → 추운 편이에요 |
| 있다 / 없다 words | + 는 편이다 | 맛있다 → 맛있는 편이에요 |
How to use it
편 means "side," so the pattern literally says "it is on the side of ...". It does not state a fact flatly. It says "generally" or "compared to most," which makes it great for describing yourself or giving an opinion politely.
Koreans use it a lot when talking about themselves, because it sounds modest. 저는 잘 먹는 편이에요 ("I'm a pretty good eater") is softer than just 잘 먹어요.
With verbs, you usually need an adverb that shows degree or frequency, such as 일찍 (early), 많이 (a lot), or 자주 (often). With adjectives, no extra word is needed.
It works in any politeness level: 편이에요 (polite), 편이야 (casual), 편입니다 (formal).

Common mistakes
Using a verb with no adverb, like 저는 먹는 편이에요. It sounds unfinished. Add a degree word: 저는 많이 먹는 편이에요.
Using 는 with adjectives, like 조용하는 편이에요. Adjectives take -(으)ㄴ: 조용한 편이에요.
