What does ㅎㅎ (hehe) mean?
- ㅎㅎhehe
Hehe / :)
Fine in most situations
ㅎㅎ (hehe) is a soft laugh or smile in Korean texting, close to "hehe" or a smiley face :). It makes a message feel warm and friendly rather than serious.
Where it comes from
ㅎ is the Korean consonant for an "h" sound. Repeating it imitates gentle laughs like 하하, 히히 or 흐흐.
How to use ㅎㅎ
ㅎㅎ is softer and calmer than ㅋㅋㅋ. Where ㅋㅋㅋ is laughing out loud, ㅎㅎ is more of a smile. That is why many people add it to polite messages, like 감사합니다 ㅎㅎ, to sound friendly instead of stiff.
It is one of the few texting laughs that is generally fine with coworkers, a friend's parents or someone older you text regularly. In very formal messages, such as to a professor or a client you have never met, it is still better to leave it out.
Length matters here too. A single ㅎ can feel cold or forced. ㅎㅎ is the usual, friendly amount, and a long ㅎㅎㅎㅎㅎ can come across as a shy or slightly awkward laugh.

Questions learners ask
Can I use ㅎㅎ with my boss or someone older?
Usually yes, if you already text with them regularly. It softens a polite message. For a very formal first contact, leave it out.
Why do Koreans put ㅎㅎ at the end of messages?
Plain Korean text can look blunt or cold. Adding ㅎㅎ shows you are smiling and keeps the tone friendly.
Is ㅎㅎ the same as ㅋㅋ?
Both are laughs, but ㅎㅎ is gentler and more like a smile, while ㅋㅋ is a bigger, more casual laugh.
