What does 소개팅 (sogaeting) mean?
- 소개팅sogaeting
Blind date
Fine in most situations
소개팅 (sogaeting) means a blind date in Korean, usually a one-on-one meeting set up by a friend. It is one of the most common ways young Koreans meet someone to date.
Where it comes from
It is 소개 (sogae), "introduction," plus 팅, taken from the English word "meeting." So it is literally an "introduction meeting."
How to use 소개팅
A friend or coworker who knows both people arranges it, shares phone numbers, and the two meet for coffee or a meal. Asking a friend 소개팅 시켜 줘 ("set me up") is very common and not embarrassing.
A 미팅 (miting) is the group version, popular with college students. A 맞선 or 선 is a more serious arranged meeting, often set up by family with marriage in mind.
After a 소개팅, friends will always ask how it went and whether there was 애프터, a second date.
