Intermediate · Linking ideas
-아서/어서 그런지 (-aseo/eoseo geureonji) means "maybe because" or "perhaps it's because". You give a likely reason for something but are not completely sure it is the real cause.
How to form it
| When | Add | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Stem with ㅏ or ㅗ | + 아서 그런지 | 많다 → 많아서 그런지 |
| Other stems | + 어서 그런지 | 마시다 → 마셔서 그런지, 춥다 → 추워서 그런지 |
| 하다 verbs | 하 → 해서 그런지 | 피곤하다 → 피곤해서 그런지 |
| Noun | + (이)라서 그런지 | 주말 → 주말이라서 그런지 |
How to use it
-아서/어서 gives a reason, and 그런지 ("whether it's because of that") makes it a guess: 피곤해서 그런지 머리가 아파요 (Maybe because I'm tired, I have a headache).
It is a soft, natural way to explain things you notice in yourself or around you. On its own, 그래서 그런지 means "maybe that's why."
Like plain -아서/어서, the reason part normally does not take the past marker 았/었. Politeness depends on the final ending.

-아서/어서: Plain -아서/어서 states the reason as a fact. Adding 그런지 makes it a guess: "maybe because."
-기 때문에: -기 때문에 states a clear, definite cause. -아서/어서 그런지 is softer and less certain.
Common mistakes
Adding the past marker to the reason part. Say 늦게 자서 그런지, not 늦게 잤어서 그런지, even when talking about last night.
Want the basics first? Read Because & and then (-아서/어서).
