How to use it

-(으)면 is "if" and 좋겠다 is "it would be good." Together they express a hope or a wish about yourself, another person, or a situation.

The past form -았/었으면 좋겠다 is very common and sounds a bit more heartfelt, like "I really wish." It doesn't mean the event is in the past: 빨리 방학이었으면 좋겠다 means "I wish it were vacation already."

It is also a gentle way to make a request: 와 주시면 좋겠어요 means "I'd be glad if you could come."

좋겠어요 is polite, 좋겠어 is casual, and 좋겠다 is often said to yourself, like thinking out loud.

-고 싶다: -고 싶다 is "I want to do" something myself. -(으)면 좋겠다 is a wish about any situation or person, including things outside your control.

-았/었으면 하다: -았/었으면 하다 means nearly the same ("I wish") and sounds a little softer and more formal.

Common mistakes

Using -고 싶다 for a wish about someone else, like 친구가 오고 싶어요. To say "I want my friend to come," use 친구가 왔으면 좋겠어요.

Questions learners ask

What does 좋겠다 mean by itself?

On its own, 좋겠다 often means "lucky you" or "that must be nice," said when someone shares good news.

Why do Koreans say 했으면 좋겠다 with the past tense?

The past form makes the wish feel stronger and more like a daydream. It still talks about the present or future, not the past.
