-고 싶어 하다

-go sipeo hada

he/she wants to

Beginner · Helper verbs

-고 싶어 하다 (-go sipeo hada) means "he wants to" or "she wants to." Korean uses -고 싶다 for your own wishes, and switches to -고 싶어 하다 when describing what someone else wants, since you can only see their wish from the outside.

How to form it

WhenAddExample
Verb stem+ 고 싶어 하다가다 → 가고 싶어 하다
Consonant stem (same rule)+ 고 싶어 하다먹다 → 먹고 싶어 하다
Past+ 고 싶어 했다보다 → 보고 싶어 했어요
Honorific+ 고 싶어 하시다가다 → 가고 싶어 하세요

How to use it

In Korean, words for wishes and feelings (싶다, 좋다, 슬프다) normally describe the speaker's own inner state. To talk about a third person, you add -아/어 하다, which describes how they show it. So 저는 가고 싶어요 (I want to go), but 동생이 가고 싶어 해요 (my sibling wants to go).

When you ask someone directly, use plain 싶다: 뭐 먹고 싶어요? (What do you want to eat?). -고 싶어 하다 is for he, she, they, and people you are talking about.

The ending on 하다 sets the politeness and tense: 싶어 해 (casual), 싶어 해요 (polite), 싶어 했어요 (wanted). For an elder, use 싶어 하세요.

Don’t mix it up with

-고 싶다: For your own wishes, or to ask "you" directly: 뭐 하고 싶어요? -고 싶어 하다 is for other people.

-아/어하다: The same idea for feeling words: 슬프다 (I'm sad) becomes 슬퍼하다 (he is sad). -고 싶어 하다 is this rule applied to 싶다.

Common mistakes

Saying 친구가 한국에 가고 싶어요 for a statement about a friend. Say 친구가 한국에 가고 싶어 해요.

Adding it to a noun. "She wants a cat" is 고양이를 갖고 싶어 해요 or 고양이를 원해요, not 고양이 싶어 해요.

Want the basics first? Read "Want to" in Korean (-고 싶다).

Questions learners ask

Is it 싶어 하다 or 싶어하다?

The standard spelling is 싶어 하다 with a space, because -아/어 하다 is attached to the whole phrase -고 싶다. You will often see 싶어하다 written together online, and people understand both.

Can I say 그는 가고 싶어요?

It sounds unnatural as a plain statement, because 싶다 describes your own feelings. Say 그는 가고 싶어 해요. In a question to someone, 가고 싶어요? is fine.
