Intermediate · Sentence endings

-는 거야 (-neun geoya) and -는 거예요 (-neun geoyeyo) mean "it's that..." or "the thing is...", and they turn a sentence into an explanation of a situation. In questions they ask for the story behind something, like "So you're going where?" or "Why is it that you're crying?". 거 is the spoken short form of 것 (thing).

WhenAddExample
Verb, present+ 는 거야 / 는 거예요가다 → 가는 거예요
Verb, past+ ㄴ/은 거야 / 거예요가다 → 간 거예요, 먹다 → 먹은 거예요
Adjective+ ㄴ/은 거야 / 거예요좋다 → 좋은 거예요
ㄹ stem (ㄹ drops before 는)drop ㄹ + 는 거야울다 → 우는 거야

How to use it

This pattern frames what you say as an explanation. In a statement it means "it's that..." or "that's how it is": 이렇게 하는 거야 means "This is how you do it."

In questions, often with 왜 or 어디, it asks the other person to explain the situation: 왜 우는 거야? sounds like "Why are you crying? What's going on?" It can sound curious, worried, or annoyed depending on tone.

거야 is casual (banmal), 거예요 is polite, and 것입니다 or 겁니다 is formal. 거야 also appears as a firm statement: 난 갈 거야 is future, but 그냥 가는 거야 means "We're just going, that's that."

-거든(요): -거든요 gives a reason the listener didn't know. -는 거예요 frames the whole situation as an explanation.

Common mistakes

Mixing up 가는 거예요 (it's that I'm going) and 갈 거예요 (I will go).

Spelling it 거에요. The correct spelling is 거예요.
