What does 안녕히 가세요 (annyeonghi gaseyo) mean?

  1. 안녕히 가세요annyeonghi gaseyo

    Goodbye (to someone leaving)

    Polite: safe with most people

안녕히 가세요 (annyeonghi gaseyo) means "goodbye" in Korean, said to someone who is leaving. You say it when you stay and the other person goes. If you are the one leaving, say 안녕히 계세요 instead.

Where it comes from

안녕히 means "in peace" or "safely," and 가세요 is a polite way to say "go." So it literally means "go in peace."

How to use 안녕히 가세요

The choice depends on who is moving. Shop staff say 안녕히 가세요 to customers walking out, and a host says it to guests at the door.

If both people are leaving, for example parting on the street, both can say 안녕히 가세요.

It is polite, so it works with strangers, teachers and older people. With friends, say 잘 가 (jal ga) or just 안녕.
