What does 잘 가 (jal ga) mean?
- 잘 가jal ga
Bye! / Get home safe
Casual: friends and people younger than you
잘 가 (jal ga) means "Bye!" or "Get home safe" in casual Korean. You say it to a friend who is leaving while you stay or go a different way.
Where it comes from
잘 means "well" and 가 is the casual form of 가다 (to go), so it literally means "go well".
How to use 잘 가
Use 잘 가 with friends, siblings and younger people at the end of a hangout, a phone call or a chat. It often comes with 내일 봐 (see you tomorrow) or 조심히 가 (go safely).
The polite version is 안녕히 가세요, said to someone who is leaving. If you are the one leaving and the other person stays, say 잘 있어 (casual) or 안녕히 계세요 (polite) instead.
In emotional scenes, 잘 가 can also be a final goodbye, the way "farewell" works in English.
