Where it comes from

It comes from 다녀오다, "to go somewhere and come back," plus 겠, which shows intention, and the formal ending 습니다. So it says "I will go and come back."

How to use 다녀오겠습니다

It is the classic thing children say to parents when leaving the house. In dramas you will hear it at the front door every morning.

Many families use the softer 다녀올게요 (polite) or 다녀올게 (casual) in everyday life. The formal 다녀오겠습니다 sounds proper and well brought up.

When you come home, say 다녀왔습니다, "I'm back." The family replies 왔어? or 잘 다녀왔어?
