What does 오빠 (oppa) mean?
- 오빠oppa
Older brother (said by females)
Casual: friends and people younger than you
오빠 (oppa) means "older brother" and is used by girls and women to talk to or about an older male. It can mean a real older brother, but women also use it for older male friends, boyfriends, and male idols they admire.
Where it comes from
오빠 is a native Korean family word. The older, more formal form is 오라버니, which you mostly hear today in historical dramas.
How to use 오빠
Only females say 오빠. A man talking to an older man uses 형 (hyung) instead. You can use it on its own as a name, like "Oppa, wait!", or add it after a first name, like 민호 오빠.
Outside the family, 오빠 shows closeness. A woman usually starts calling an older man 오빠 once they are friendly, so it can sound warm or even a little flirty depending on the situation. Between couples it is very common for a girlfriend to call her older boyfriend 오빠.
Do not use 오빠 for someone much older, like a man your father's age, or in a formal setting such as work. There, a title or 선배 (sunbae) fits better.
