What does 탈덕 (taldeok) mean?
- 탈덕taldeok
Quitting being a fan
Casual: friends and people younger than you
탈덕 (taldeok) is Korean fan slang for quitting being a fan, leaving a fandom you used to be part of. It is the opposite of 입덕 (ipdeok), becoming a fan. The verb is 탈덕하다.
Where it comes from
탈 means "to escape" or "to leave", and 덕 comes from 덕후 (deokhu), "devoted fan". So 탈덕 is literally "leaving fandom".
How to use 탈덕
People 탈덕 for many reasons: losing interest, growing older, or being let down by a scandal. Fans also joke 탈덕은 없다 ("there is no quitting") about groups they will never stop loving.
A softer word is 휴덕, "taking a break from fandom", when you plan to come back. Someone who left and returned might say they came back after 탈덕.
It is casual slang for friends and fan communities. Be gentle with it: telling a fan that you've 탈덕 from their favorite can feel a bit hurtful.
